Dolomites Day Trip from Venice

Every Dolomites day trip from Venice here is a 9-12 hour day, and only 3 h 30 min to 4 h 45 min of it is at the lakes and in Cortina. Pick a route first: a shared minivan day to Cortina and Lake Misurina, a Lake Braies day, or a private driver, and know that by public bus you can reach Cortina but not the lakes.

From $100 per person, shared minivan days
9-12 h door to door from Venice
3h30-4h45 actually at the stops
Time at the stops summed from each listing's own timed itinerary
Cancellation terms shown on every tour card
Start point and meeting details shown on every tour card
Lake Braies and Tre Cime access rules from the official bodies
Quick answer Is it worth it, how long, which tour

Yes, a Dolomites day trip from Venice is a 9-10 hour day, with about 4 hours at the stops and the rest in the van. It is worth it if you accept that most of the day is the drive. Without a tour you can reach Cortina by bus but not Lake Braies or the Tre Cime in one day.

Key takeaways

  • The pick: Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, 4.9 from 1,182 reviews, $107 per person, up to 8 people → see the card
  • Lake Braies and the Tre Cime road are restricted in summer, so they need a tour or an official reservation → where tours go
  • By public bus a day trip is Cortina only: the first bus leaves Piazzale Roma at 6.20 and the last bus back leaves Cortina at 16.30 → going without a tour
  • Two or three days in the Dolomites is better if you want to hike rather than look → day trip or overnight

Dolomites Day Trips from Venice

Prices are per person unless a card says per group. The booking platform handles payment and cancellation, free up to 24 hours before on most listings, so read each card. The grid runs from shared minivan days around Cortina and Lake Misurina, through Lake Braies days, to private drivers, a winter day and a Dolomites plus Prosecco wine day. Most leave from Piazzale Roma early in the morning.

Which Dolomites Day Trip to Book

If You want the first-timer pick with the best reviews

The Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes costs $107 per person, runs 9 hours with about 4 hours at the stops, is capped at 8 people and holds a 4.9 rating from 1,182 reviews.

If Lake Braies is the one place you must see

The Dolomites and Braies Lake Full-Day Tour is the cheapest at $100 and its listing says a dedicated pass lets the van drive right by Lake Braies. The Lake Braies and Tre Cime Minivan Trip at $110 adds a Tre Cime photo stop and Monte Piana.

If You want the most places in one day

The Exclusive Private Dolomites and Braies Trip covers six stops with 4 h 45 min on the ground for $1,118 per group up to 7. The Iconic Dolomites from Venice or Treviso fits six stops including Cibiana di Cadore for $178 per person.

If You travel as a family or a group of 4 or more

A per-group price covers everyone in the van. The Exclusive Private Dolomites and Braies Trip takes up to 7, and the Private Dolomites and Prosecco Hills with Wine takes up to 8 at $1,340 with a Valdobbiadene tasting.

If You come in winter

The Private Dolomites Winter Day Trip offers a snowmobile ascent to the Tre Cime in the snow season, and the Lake Braies and Tre Cime Minivan Trip has an optional 30-minute snowmobile ride to Monte Piana from 6 December to the end of March.

Dolomites Day Trip From Venice in Six Decisions

Every day trip here comes down to six choices, and each one has a short answer.

Dolomites, Explained

  • Cortina has no railway station: Calalzo di Cadore station is 35 km away, linked by Dolomiti Bus, and Dobbiaco station is 31 km away, linked by SAD. Cortina's bus terminal is at the Ice Stadium.

Where to Stay in Cortina for a Second Day

A night in the mountains turns the day trip into the Tre Cime shuttle the next morning. Stay near the bus terminal at the Ice Stadium for the buses to and from Venice, or at Misurina for the first shuttle up.

Links open a hotel search for that area on Booking.com through Stay22. Prices and availability are shown there.

How Much of the Day You Spend in the Dolomites

A day trip is worth it if you accept 4-6 hours in the van. The payoff is alpine lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape and Cortina itself.

Time at the Stops, Tour by Tour

The stop times are the ones each listing prints in its own itinerary. Cafe breaks and lunch stops are left out. The remainder of the day is driving.

Longest Stops and Shortest Days

The pick, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, has the longest single stop at 2 h 15 min at Lake Misurina. Dolomites and Braies Lake Full-Day Tour gives 2 h at Misurina plus 45 min at Lake Braies for the lowest price. If you want the most places packed in, Iconic Dolomites from Venice or Treviso makes six stops and Exclusive Private Dolomites and Braies Trip spends 4 h 45 min at the stops. The shortest day is the private Cortina and Dolomites day at 8 hours door to door.

Tours That Do Not Time Their Stops

Four listings print no stop times: Dolomites and Cortina Small-Group Tour, Lakes of the Dolomites with Drone Video, Private Dolomites Tour with Lake Braies and the private winter day. Ask the operator how long you get at Lake Braies or Misurina before booking. It matters, because the whole day is 9-11 hours and 30 minutes more or less at the lake decides how rushed you feel.

The Honest Small Print

Every Dolomites day trip from Venice has real limits. Here they are before you pay.

Review on GetYourGuide for Private Cortina and Dolomites Day Trip

Reviews, ratings and counts are the platforms' own, shown as published for each listing. They are not reviews of this site.

Dos and Don'ts for the Day

Do

  • Do pack a warm layer even in summer, because the stops sit high in the mountains and the weather turns fast.
  • Do book Lake Braies parking ahead in July and August, because from 1 July to 15 September, 9:00 to 16:00, cars without an online reservation are turned away.
  • Do carry a card or contactless for the Tre Cime shuttle at $11.13 (€10) a day, because the bus does not accept cash.
  • Do budget extra for the chairlift, because lifts like Col de Varda, $18.92 (€17) return, are not included in the tour price.

Don't

  • Don't bring a large bag without asking, because minivans such as the pick, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, take large bags only if requested beforehand.
  • Don't count on lunch being included, because most listings sell food separately and some, like Pusteria Valley, Lake Braies and Tre Cime, forbid food in the vehicle.
  • Don't plan Cortina to Misurina by bus without checking the seasonal timetable, because Dolomiti Bus lists line 51 only for 10 September to 4 October.
  • Don't drive to Rifugio Auronzo without a reservation, because access needs an online booking with your plate, added by 23:59 the day before, at $44.52 (€40) per car.

Everything Else Worth Knowing

Where the Day Trips Go: Cortina, the Lakes and the Tre Cime

Every Dolomites day trip from Venice threads the same corridor: Pieve di Cadore, Lake Auronzo, Lake Misurina, Cortina d'Ampezzo and, on some tours, Lake Braies. Here is what each stop offers and the rules that decide how you reach it.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Nearly every tour stops in Cortina, the Olympic host town of Milano Cortina 2026. Time on the ground runs from about 30 minutes on the lakes day with drone footage and the private Venice Events day to 1 h 30 min on the coach trip from Venice and Mestre and the small-group day from Venice or Treviso. Expect a stop of about an hour on the pick, the Cortina and 2 lakes minivan trip, and on the full-day tour that adds Lake Braies. Cortina's bus terminal is at the Ice Stadium, which is where buses from Venice pull in if you travel on your own. Use the stop for lunch and a walk along Corso Italia.

Lunch is rarely included. On the private day with Prosecco Hills and wine the Cortina lunch stop is 75 minutes, with food paid separately.

Lake Misurina and Col de Varda

Lake Misurina is the longest stop on most tours. The pick gives it 2 h 15 min, the full-day Braies tour two hours and the private day for up to 8 two hours too. From the lake the Col de Varda chairlift climbs above Misurina. It runs 18 June to 20 September, with an adult return at $18.92 (€17) and an uphill ticket at $14.47 (€13). Children under 6 ride free.

The lift is not in any tour price. On the private trip the driver points it out as an option, paid on the spot. Outside 18 June to 20 September the lift is closed and the lake stop is a walk along the shore, with the Three Peaks reflected in the water on clear days. On a grey day the stop is a shorter walk by the water.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Most tours show the peaks from a viewpoint or from Lake Misurina rather than driving the toll road, with photo stops of 15 to 30 minutes. The minivan trip to Lake Braies and Tre Cime counts a 15-minute photo stop, the private Braies day for up to 7 counts 30 minutes, and the small-group day from Venice or Treviso stops 15 minutes at a viewpoint.

If you drive yourself, the toll road from Lake Antorno to Rifugio Auronzo runs about 6 km to 2,333 m. Access needs an online reservation with your car plate, added by 23:59 the day before. A car pays $44.52 (€40), a bus up to 30 seats $89.04 (€80). The road is open generally end of May to end of October, weather permitting. Without a car, the Dolomiti Bus shuttle from Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo runs daily from 30 May at $11.13 (€10) a day, cash not accepted on board.

Lake Braies

Six tours reach Lake Braies: the Lake Braies and Tre Cime minivan trip, the full-day Braies tour, the Pusteria Valley day, the drone day to Braies, Misurina and Cortina, and the private trips with Lake Braies and for up to 7. Stops run 45 minutes to 1 h 30 min.

The access rule matters if you drive yourself. From 1 July to 15 September, 9:00 to 16:00, the lake is closed to cars without an online reservation. The combined ticket costs $48.97 (€44) and covers a full-day transit permit, guaranteed parking and a $24.49 (€22) voucher for restaurants and shops. Buses 439 and 442 need advance booking and prepayment, and once a bus is fully booked you cannot reach the lake by bus that day. Arriving before 9:00 does not guarantee a spot. The Prags tourist office says the rule returns in summer 2027, with details published in spring 2027.

Lake Auronzo, Pieve di Cadore and Lake Landro

These are the short stops that break up the drive. Pieve di Cadore gets 30 minutes on the pick, the full-day Braies tour and the private Braies day. Lake Auronzo (Lake Santa Caterina) gets 15 to 20 minutes on the same tours.

Lake Landro (Dürrensee) appears on the coach day from Venice and Mestre with 30 minutes and a Three Peaks viewpoint nearby, on the small-group day from Venice or Treviso, and on the drone day over the lakes. Lake Santa Croce opens the private days with 10 minutes.

The Stops at a Glance

The table sums the stop times each tour listing prints in its own itinerary, so you can see how much of the day is ground time and what a place costs or demands if you go on your own. The rest of each day is the drive. Prices in euros are converted at the European Central Bank rate of 1 EUR = 1.1130 USD.

Venice to the Dolomites Without a Tour

You can reach the Dolomites from Venice without a car. The direct bus to Cortina d'Ampezzo is the only realistic public-transport day trip, and a rented car opens the two 2026 access rules below.

By Bus: Cortina Express and Dolomiti Bus

Two operators run the direct line. The Cortina Express winter timetable printed below runs daily from 1 October to 8 June. From Venice the morning Dolomiti Bus leaves Piazzale Roma at 6.20, while the Cortina Express runs from Mestre station and Marco Polo airport from late morning. The airport stop is the tour bus parking. Journey time from the timetable is about 2 h 10 min from the airport and 2 h 30 min from Mestre, and 3 h 10 min on the Dolomiti Bus from Piazzale Roma.

Times below come straight from that timetable.

The Way Back

Cortina Express buses leave Cortina at 9.30, 11.30 and 16.30, reaching Mestre station at 12.00, 14.00 and 19.00 and the airport at 11.45, 13.45 and 18.45. For a day trip the 16.30 departure is the one that matters, since it reaches Mestre at 19.00.

Dolomiti Bus also runs back in the afternoon at 14.30, arriving Piazzale Roma at 17.30. Its morning run from Cortina is 7.00 on the winter timetable and 7.30 on the other one, so check the timetable before you travel. The buses leave from the Cortina bus station at the Ice Stadium.

What a Bus Day Trip Gets You

Take the 6.20 out of Piazzale Roma and return on the 16.30, and the timetable gives you about 7 hours in Cortina. That is enough for the town, a walk and lunch, but it is a Cortina-only day. Lake Misurina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo sit further up the road and need a local bus in season. The Dolomiti Bus Tre Cime shuttle runs daily from 30 May between Misurina and Rifugio Auronzo, with a day ticket of $11.13 (€10) per person, and cash is not accepted on board.

Fares from Venice start at $13.91 (€12.50) each way. Tickets are sold online, in the app, by phone or on board from the crew at no extra charge, subject to availability. If you want the lakes, the peaks and the passes worked into one day with no changes, compare the Dolomites day trip from Venice options instead.

By Train

The nearest railway stations to Cortina are Calalzo, 35 km away and linked by Dolomiti Bus, and Dobbiaco, 31 km away and linked by SAD. So a train day trip means rail to a valley station and a bus up from there, with a change on the way. Check Trenitalia for the rail leg and the bus operators for the connection before you set the day.

For most travelers the direct bus from Piazzale Roma or Mestre is simpler: one seat, no change, and the 6.20 departure reaches Cortina at 9.30.

By Car

Cortina is 162 km from Marco Polo airport, and no official page prints a drive time. A car day trip is tempting but two access rules decide where you can go. At Lake Braies, from 1 July to 15 September between 9:00 and 16:00 you may only arrive by public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or with an online reservation or valid transit permit. The combined ticket is $48.97 (€44) and covers a full-day transit permit, guaranteed parking and a $24.49 (€22) voucher for restaurants and shops, booked in advance. Buses 439 and 442 need prepaid booking in that period.

The Tre Cime road to Rifugio Auronzo, open generally end of May to end of October, needs an online reservation with your number plate, added by 23:59 the day before. A car pays $44.52 (€40) and a bus up to 30 seats $89.04 (€80). Winter tyres or chains are advised on that road. Without the reservations a guided day such as the Dolomites and Braies Lake full-day tour reaches Lake Braies without the paperwork.

Best Time for a Dolomites Day Trip from Venice

The Dolomites have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 26 June 2009, and their access rules shift with the season. What you can reach on a day trip depends on the month you travel.

Season by Season

The two deciding rules for drivers are the Lake Braies traffic rule and the Tre Cime toll road reservation. Buses and tours are also seasonal: the Misurina chairlift and boats run only in summer, and winter trips swap stops. This table pulls the periods from the official traffic pages, the lift operator and the listings themselves.

PeriodWhat is openWhat changes on a tour
Late May to JuneThe Tre Cime road and Rifugio Auronzo open around the end of May, weather permitting. The Tre Cime shuttle from Misurina runs daily from 30 May.Col de Varda chairlift not running until 18 June. The Tre Cime toll road needs an online reservation with your plate, $44.52 (€40) per car.
18 June to 20 SeptemberCol de Varda chairlift at Lake Misurina: adult return $18.92 (€17), uphill only $14.47 (€13), under 6 free. Hours 9:00-16:45, to 17:15 from 25 July to 30 August. The pick, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, sells the chairlift as an extra, not included.
1 July to 15 SeptemberLake Braies is closed to cars without an online reservation from 9:00 to 16:00. The combined ticket is $48.97 (€44) with guaranteed parking and a $24.49 (€22) voucher. Buses 439 and 442 need prepaid booking.Tours with a dedicated minivan pass, like Dolomites and Braies Lake Full-Day Tour, say a dedicated pass lets the van drive right by the lake.
Late September to OctoberThe Tre Cime road stays open to about the end of October, weather permitting. Dolomiti Bus line 51 links Cortina to Misurina from 10 September to 4 October.Fewer bus options between Cortina and Lake Misurina once line 51 ends.
November to AprilChairlifts and boats are closed. Lakes can be frozen from January to March.Private Dolomites Winter Day Trip swaps in a snowmobile or cable car. Lake Braies and Tre Cime Minivan Trip offers a snowmobile ride to Monte Piana from 6 December to the end of March, $33.39 (€30) on the day.

Bad Weather and Fog

Some shared tours, such as Best of the Dolomites Mountains Day Trip, state that they run in any weather, so a grey forecast does not cancel your day. Private bookings work differently: Private Dolomites Tour with Lake Braies can be cancelled for bad weather, so keep a fallback morning free. In winter, Private Dolomites Winter Day Trip picks between two routes, a snowmobile ascent to Tre Cime di Lavaredo needing fresh snow or a cable car up Mount Elmo, depending on conditions.

Snow can also force itinerary changes on any winter day, so bring cold-weather clothing and check the cancellation terms, which on most listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

One Day or Two: When to Stay in Cortina

A day trip from Venice works, but it is a long day with hard choices about what to skip. One extra night in Cortina buys back the stops that a single day squeezes.

What One Day Cannot Do

A 9 to 12 hour day from Venice spends most of it in the van. Even the most generous listing, Exclusive Private Dolomites and Braies Trip, gives 4 h 45 min across all its stops, and shared days run from 3 h 30 min. There is no time for the Tre Cime loop walk from Rifugio Auronzo.

Tours that combine Lake Braies and Cortina, like Dolomites and Braies Lake Full-Day Tour, split that time into a 45 minute stop at Braies and an hour in Cortina. Add Pieve di Cadore, Lake Auronzo and Lake Misurina and every stop is a photo stop. If the peaks are the goal and not the backdrop, stay over.

Staying One Night

You can reach Cortina without a tour. Dolomiti Bus leaves Venice Piazzale Roma at 6.20, reaching Cortina at 9.30, and an 18.20 departure arrives 21.30. The Cortina Express leaves Mestre station at 17.00, arriving Cortina 19.30. Fares start from $13.91 (€12.50) each way. The bus terminal is at the Ice Stadium, and the nearest railway stations are Calalzo, 35 km away, and Dobbiaco, 31 km away.

With a night there, take the Tre Cime shuttle from Misurina the next morning. It runs daily from 30 May, costs $11.13 (€10) for a day ticket and takes you to Rifugio Auronzo, the start of the loop walk. Card and contactless are accepted, cash is not. Then ride back to Venice on the 16.30 Cortina Express, which reaches Mestre at 19.00. For where to sleep, see where to stay in Cortina.

Dolomites Day Trip from Venice: Questions

Can I take a day trip to the Dolomites from Venice, and is it too rushed?

Yes, it is a long but workable day. The pick, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, runs 9 hours with about 4 h at the stops, so most of the day is driving. The time at the stops on every tour shows the split.

How long does it take to get from Venice to Cortina, and how far is it?

Cortina lies 162 km from Marco Polo airport. On the timetable the bus takes 2 h 30 min from Mestre or 2 h 10 min from the airport, and up to 3 h 10 min from Piazzale Roma on the 6.20 Dolomiti Bus. Full times are in the bus timetable.

Is there a train from Venice to the Dolomites? Can you do it without a car?

Not all the way. The nearest railway stations are Calalzo, 35 km from Cortina, and Dobbiaco, 31 km, both with a bus link. The practical car-free route is the direct bus: Dolomiti Bus and Cortina Express link Venice and Cortina from $13.91 (€12.50) each way. See the bus times.

Can I see Tre Cime and Lake Braies in one day from Venice?

Only from the van or a short photo stop. Exclusive Private Dolomites and Braies Trip fits a 30 minute Tre Cime photo stop and 45 minutes at Lake Braies into a 10 hour private day. A proper Tre Cime walk needs an overnight, as explained in one day or two.

What is the best Dolomites day trip from Venice?

The pick is Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes at $107 per person, rated 4.9 from 1,182 reviews with up to 8 people per van. The cheapest with Lake Braies added is Dolomites and Braies Lake Full-Day Tour at $100.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Some shared tours, such as Best of the Dolomites Mountains Day Trip, say they run in any weather, so the day goes ahead with lower views. Private Dolomites Tour with Lake Braies can be cancelled for bad weather. Most listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Is it better to stay 2 or 3 days in the Dolomites?

If the Tre Cime loop walk or a longer stop at Lake Braies is the goal, yes. One night lets you ride the $11.13 (€10) Tre Cime shuttle from Misurina and return on the 16.30 Cortina Express. One day or two shows what a single day from Venice cannot fit.

Book the pick, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, at $107 per person for 9 hours across Lake Misurina, Lake Auronzo and Cortina.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, per the listing.
